Sunscreen
Research shows that sunscreen is a must all year-round and especially when we are more likely to spend time outdoors. During the summer, you may find yourself camping, heading to the pool, barbecuing, and more. This means a lot of time outside and a potential for sun damage and sun burns. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, any sunscreen we use should have an SPF of 30 or more. Keep in mind that because babies have sensitive skin, sunscreen is not recommended for babies under 6 months. Sunscreen contains ingredients like oxybenzone which can enter breastmilk through the bloodstream. For babies 6 months and under, try to keep them safe under the shade of an umbrella or tree and dress them in lightweight clothing as well as a sun hat (see our options below). Stay indoors when it is the hottest outside.
Sunscreen Tip: Always test sunscreen on a small part of the body, like the inner elbow, 48 hours before you plan to go outdoors to give you time to observe an allergic reaction or irritation.
